Humans are always on the look out for species on earth and especially concerned on those already extinct, or in the verge of extinction. However, have we look at the possibility that humans are also on the verge of extinction? The reason of that is that there is an evidence that the sperm quality of male has been decreasing for the last 50 years. This data comes from a studyPDF published in British Medical Journal. Experts discovered that the caused of the decrease of sperm quality is due to synthetic chemicals used pesticides and plastics.
A long time ago, when our ancestors lived in the jungles, the danger they watched out for was from nature like lions, snakes, and among many others. Fortunately for them, these dangers are obviously visible. Today, we live in an environment where we are not aware what are health risks. Even the foods we buy and eat are not guaranteed safe and healthy due to their packaging. The invention of plastics was a breakthrough, but unfortunately, some chemicals used in the manufacturing are not healthy friendly. Chemicals like BPA(Bisphenol A) is an endocrine disrupter that intervenes normal functions of our hormones.
In 1993, BBC Horizon aired a documentary “Assault On The Male“. Revealed in this documentary are the various chemicals cuasing the decrease of quality in sperm. Although some of the chemicals have been banned already like DDT, some of these endocrine disrupting chemicals are still in used. BPA(Bisphenol A) is also banned, but only for used in baby bottles.
Below is an hour long documentary, but it’s worth watching from start to finish. Experts said that these chemicals interact the endocrine function even before the baby is born. Hence, even the fetus inside the mother’s womb is not safe. The chemicals like BPA acts like the female hormone estrogen. If the fetus inside the womb is male, it can affect the development of the testes and even abnormalities like undescended testes(cryptorchidism), smaller penis size, and even hypospadias. And, although not mentioned, it may also cause or contribute risk of developing penile curvature.
CBC News also has a documentary about these harmful chemicals contained in toys, shampoos, and many plastics inside our home. It’s almost like there’s no escape because anywhere we go, these chemicals are ubiquitous. In the earlier documentary,` we’ve learned that the plastic lining in canned foods have BPA. Where else can we find these chemicals?
The main purpose of documentaries like these is not to spread fear. Perhaps some people look at it that way that there’s no more hope and we just die without any options. However, if we look at this in a different perspective, we turn this dilemma into a positive and empowering angle. The more we know about where are these chemicals are hiding, the better we can take action to avoid them.
Hopefully, at this point, you now have an idea how important is the developing testes of the fetus inside the mother’s womb. Testosterone hormone is also produced in the testicles, hence if the testicles are not well-developed, there’s a higher chance of developing low-testosterone during adulthood. Therefore, regardless of one’s effort to improve and maintain good male sexual health, it would be an uphill battle.
In 1962, Rachel Carson wrote the book “Silent Spring“ that led to the outcry of the banning of DDT. Another book worth reading that covers and educates us about synthetic chemicals and its dangers to both humans and nature is “Our Stolen Future“.
