Food cravings is an almost irresistible habit of untimely eating. No wonder many people today are unknowingly affected by this unhealthy habit.
This urge to eat make one to consistently want a particular food or foods containing a certain ingredient. The bad news is that the urge to eat is not due to hunger but simply want to eat. This is somewhat an addiction for food.
While food cravings and food addiction have similarities, they are different.
Food Cravings vs Food Addiction
Food cravings are natural. However, when it becomes uncontrollable it becomes a food addiction. It’s fine to crave eating a piece of cookie, but eating the entire box of cookies is a loss of control.
When loses control on its craving for certain foods and eat much more than what is needed, it’s an addiction already. Fortunately, regardless of the uncontrollable food cravings or addiction, there are ways to suppress and stop it.
Food addiction has many unhealthy and even deadly consequences on health. It is the number one cause of obesity, which led to numerous metabolic diseases including diabetes and heart-related problems.
Knowing the reasons of uncontrollable food cravings is vital to fighting and making the effort to stop it.
Reasons For Food Cravings
Let us explore the primary causes of uncontrollable food cravings. Knowing them is vital for taking action on what to do and avoid. It’s like going to a battle armed with proper knowledge and facts about the enemies.
Depression and Stress
Blood sugar level hit its low during the feeling of depression and exhaustion. When this happens, the brain signals that it needs something to pep it up. The signal or hormone produced by the brain wants carbs.
Serotonin is the hormone responsible for craving foods, which is also responsible for satiety or feeling of fullness. As soon as the blood sugar level drops even if not hungry, serotonin creates food cravings.
The common foods the brain wants when this process occurs are sweets. It’s no wonder why most people who feel hungry end up eating sweet foods and drinking sweet beverages.
There’s nothing wrong wanting to eat and drink sweets. What’s wrong is that people are eating the wrong kinds of sweets. During the old days when refined carbs and sweets were not yet available, people eat fruits. Fruits are full of nutrients having a wide variety of antioxidants, vitamins, and dietary fibers.
When we eat whole foods, we feel full and satisfied very easily. Even just eating a small amount, it’s already satisfying.
What’s Wrong With Eating Refined Carbs?
It’s unfortunate that today, most foods available for snacks are based on refined carbs. The only good thing about these foods is that they’re cheap and widely available and not to mention, they’re cheap, too.
The bad news in eating refined foods is that they’re stripped out of the vital nutrients. What remains in these refined foods is carbs either in the form of sugar, or refined white flour.
Our gut or gastrointestinal tract is equipped with many sensors that sense the vital nutrients contained in the food. When the foods we eat, in the case of refined and highly processed foods, the gut can’t find the vital nutrients. Therefore, it keeps telling to eat more as it is not yet feeling the fullness or satiety.
The second reason that triggers food cravings is adrenal exhaustion, which commonly known as adrenal fatigue. Today, this condition is common, bud sadly some people don’t give much attention to it.
When adrenal fatigue occurs, a signal is sent to the brain that it is time to eat even it’s not yet the right time for eating. Again, it wants sweets. If you’re craving sweet foods during late nights, it’s an indication. When this happens, it’s time to look at your diet and make sure you pick up whole foods insteads of packaged and highly processed foods.
The people who are commonly affected with this habit are those eating low-fat/low-carb diets. Even those who taking appetite suppressants are no exception. Probably, the reason for this is due to insulin resistance.
Overcoming Food Cravings
Should you value the essential motives for the craving, subsequently surpassing the food craving can be performed. It might require some time, but it is certainly doable.
